Yesterday I went along to the Fine Art interview at Howard Gardens Cardiff. I met with David the tutor of fine art and we chatted about my work. It felt a bit daunting as I had to spread my work across the table and casually flicked through every book.
He asked me a few questions, like ” who is your favourite artist” to which i replied…..”Andres Serrano and Damien Hirst” he did not appreciate my answer as he said that it was like I just picked out these famous ‘pretentious’ artists. I was actually quite taken back by this as I had been completely honest and I did not expect him to reply like that.
Anyway he showed me around the painting department which was fantastic, so inspiring! However painting is something I do not want to do. We went back into the room and he said that he didn’t think my work was right for this course. He said that my work was a bit all over the place and didn’t have one specific medium, which is completely true.
He gave me the task of taking a month to create my own art that has nothing to do with uni projects and to come back with a good body of work and we will have another interview. I have to be honest I was completely gutted, however what he said was true and I respect that. I don’t feel that I have found my true voice within my art.
So now I am concentrating on finishing my project for textiles and then maybe I will get to work on my own work after uni has finished. I have a lot to think about.
